Ship Fitter Welder

Journeyman level with minimum 3 years shipyard experience.

Shipfitters must be able to accomplish the following:
a. Interpret blueprints and welding symbols to properly join metals IAW specified procedures and techniques.
b. Remove, repair, layout, fabricate and install structural materials, including the operations of portable pneumatic tools as necessary, onboard ships, on piers and docks and in shop as needed.
c. Repair, modify and install decking, handrails and ladders in main auxiliary machinery spaces.
d. Template, layout and fabricate structures and fittings including bulkheads, equipment, equipment foundations, hangers, ladders, stanchions, brows accommodation ladders, and guards.
e. Perform structural welding of deck structures, support braces, foundations, or hangers using one of a number of processes such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), or flux-core arc welding (FCAW) onboard vessels, in buildings and in the field.
f. Weld all material thicknesses using manual and semi-automatic welding processes; operate various types of manual and semi-automatic cutting equipment (oxygen/fuel as well as plasma arc); set up, preheat and air-arcing in way of the welding and quality assurance process.
g. Prepare finished welds by hand grinding or burring to meet visual acceptance standards.
h. Perform post weld cleaning of Ship’s structural repair areas.
i. Install hot work protection and/or build weld containments for fire prevention.
j. Fire Watch and Tank Watch.
k. General housekeeping (GHK) is accomplished as needed per shift.

Painter Blaster

Journeyman level with minimum of 3 years experience in marine coatings.

Painter-Blasters must be able to accomplish the following:
a. Set up, operate, and maintain industrial sandblasting equipment IAW OSHA, federal, state and local standards and requirements for shipyard work.
b. Set up, operate, and maintain industrial 6000 psi or less pressure washing equipment IAW OSHA, federal, state and local standards and requirements for shipyard work.
c. Prepare material for preservation by abrasive blasting, including shipboard blasting of hulls, tanks and superstructures and shop blasting of ship components and other items IAW NAVSEA Standard Item (009-32).
d. Prepare surface for preservation by abrasive blasting, pressure washing, or mechanical preparation to include hulls, tanks, superstructures and in shop preparation of ship components and other items in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Item (009-32).
e. Apply and Remove various paint coatings on ships and non-nuclear components, interior/exterior surface ships, and maritime vessels preservation per NAVSEA Standard Item (009-32).
f. Properly handle and utilize hazardous materials/solvents, including but not limited to, toxic and non-toxic painting materials, select proper protection required when applying, removing, and properly disposing of hazardous waste generated.
g. Set up, operate, and maintain industrial paint spraying equipment, airless painting equipment, and sandblasting equipment IAW OSHA, federal, state and local standards and requirements for shipyard work.
h. Prepare and mask surfaces for preservation.
i. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Performs, routine task independently.
j. General housekeeping (GHK) is accomplished as needed per shift.

Pipe Fitter Welder

Journeyman level with minimum of 3 years experience in pipe fabrication, fitting, welding and brazing.

Pipefitters must be able to accomplish the following:
a. Ability to fabricate, install, modify, and repair piping/hoses in shop and aboard ship.
b. Ability to layout, template, target, bend, assemble, and install piping.
c. Ability to fabricate various kinds of pressure joints within piping systems, inspect and test piping as required to certify systems, and checkout, troubleshoot, groom, modify, repair, and test ship’s installations.
d. Interpret blueprints and welding symbols to properly join metals IAW specified procedures and techniques.
e. Perform pipe brazing and welding using one of a number of processes such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) or gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) onboard vessels, in buildings and in the field.
f. Ability to hydrostatic test, component check, adjust, align, and operational test piping systems.
g. Ability to remove valves and install jumpers, blanks, test equipment, and pumps to ready system for preliminary air test and hydrostatic test and flushing.
h. Ability to ship check, layout, template, and draw pipe assemblies for fabrication.
i. General housekeeping (GHK) is accomplished as needed per shift.

Marine Electrician

Journeyman level with minimum 3 years experience with shipboard electrical systems.

Marine Electricians must be able to accomplish the following:
a. Be able to lift 50 pounds (minimum).
b. Be able to lift and perform work overhead.
c. Working knowledge of trade mathematics and formulas required to calculate voltage, amperes, and resistance requirements and to determine size and types of material, such as controls, switches, distribution panels, fuses, cable and conduit size, determining power source, etc., for each project and/or test.
d. Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, written technical instructions, manuals and draw/make basic working diagrams and circuits.
e. Fully versed in the use of all types of electrical measuring instruments and various electronic measuring devices, such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, and power analyzers.
f. General housekeeping (GHK) is accomplished as needed per shift.

Marine Machinery Mechanic

Journeyman level with minimum 3 years experience with shipboard machinery systems.

Marine Machinery Mechanics must be able to accomplish the following:
a. Trade knowledge of mechanical principles of the operating of machinery, hydraulics, the machining of metals, mathematics, basic physics and general science.
b. Ability to operate, set up and align various portable tools used in the trade as well as the ability to use such precision measuring instruments as height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, lay-out tools, vibro techometers, stroboscopic tachometers, vibration indicators.
c. Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair ship machinery such as, but not limited to, propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, valves, launchers, discharge machinery, ventilation equipment, steering gear, evaporators, heaters, pumps, condensers, and propulsion plants.
d. Ability to test and inspect installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
e. Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches and specifications and to apply manual skills in dissembling, repairing and building equipment and machinery.
f. General housekeeping (GHK) is accomplished as needed per shift.
