Founder Story

Our Founder William “Willie” Caliedo, Jr. emigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines in the 70s. When he arrived at Honolulu International Airport he only had $20 dollars in his pocket, his skill as a Pipeline Welder for Philippines’ National Power Co., and a dream for a better life. He quickly climbed the skilled labor ranks at Hawaii’s private shipyards. So quickly was his ascent that he was commanding a crew of shipfitter welders aboard a Young Bros. tugboat while still classified as an apprentice level journeyman. After numerous successful federal and commercial ship repair projects and being elevated to Foreman, it appeared he had reached a glass ceiling in his career. As a Master Craftsman he was still subject to layoffs and union politics despite his tremendous value to the shipyard.

In 1990 he decided to set out on his own venture and founded Caliedo & Sons (C&S) Services, Inc. At the time it was a small welding outfit performing commercial ship repair, just Willie and an apprentice. Soon others joined the ranks; mostly all trained by Willie himself, and the company grew to be a major contributor in the local ship repair industry. It’s not known who first coined the slogan “Can Do!”, but it was regularly said by Port Engineers, Ship Insurance Inspectors, and the entire waterfront community that there wasn’t a welding job C&S couldn’t do. “Can Do!” embodies the company’s ability to perform highly technical quality work at the most competitive cost and timely schedule

The C&S Story Continues

In 2001 Willie’s first of two sons, Ian Caliedo current President & Owner, joined the company full-time after acquiring his Management BBA at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His apprenticeship started at 12 years of age since the company’s founding. As a full-time employee, he worked his way up from journeyman to executive duties. In 2003, the company entered the SBA’s 8(a) Small Disadvantaged Business program. From 2003 – 2010 C&S surged with Federal contracts and grew to a size of nearly 60 employees.

But as every tide has an ebb and flow, after graduating from the 8(a) program C&S downsized to a more manageable 24 employees. It was during this time from 2006 – 2014 that Ian realized that many of the welding skills from ship repair could be easily transferred to land-based work in Industrial Facilities and Hotel Resorts. Major projects included Hawaii Metal Recycling Plant: Dry System Conversion and Four Seasons Wailea: Steam System Upgrades and Commercial Laundry Installation.

In 2013 Wille’s second son, Christopher Caliedo, withdrew from the company to compete directly. The move divided C&S’ clientele as well as skilled labor force. Full ownership has been transferred to Ian Caliedo in 2017.

Today the organization is experiencing a growth phase as a large mainland Shipbuilding Contractor exits the marketplace. C&S has acquired and developed a high-performance leadership team as well as redefined its culture and values.

Teamwork, Ownership, Respect, Growth, and Caring are our values. Our culture is based on Ohana which started as Willie, Mila, and their two sons. It continues today as Ian & Karen Caliedo and the sons and daughters of a company commissioned to bless Hawaii with a new essential industry. Today, C&S sets forth on a new vision to make Hawai’i the World Leader in Shipbuilding and Repair.
